Effective Suncare & Sunless Tanning Made Easy

Skin is one of the most amazing organs and is the largest living organ of the human body, and possibly one of the most neglected. Skin is made up of very specific cells and tissues, and their collective purpose is to act as the boundary between "you" and "the world". The primary environmental factor affecting our skin on a day-to-day basis is the sun which is the primary reason for premature aging, pigmentation and skin cancer.

SPF (Sun Protection Factor) ratings are a measure of protection against UV(ultra-violet) B rays (so-called "burn" rays) only, not UVA rays (so called "age" rays, as they cause most of the irreversible damage of photoaging).

  • UVA can penetrate windows, clouds, and water, and are also produced by flourescent lights.
  • "Chemical" sunscreens (PABA, etc.) work by chemically interacting with the skin layers to absorb UVA or UVB rays. Physical sunblocks--sometimes marketed as "non-chemical" (such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to supplement your sun protection products for added protection)--shield the skin by reflecting or scattering both UVA and UVB rays. Bonus: physical blocks also protect skin from infrared light (long-wave visible rays--the newest sun concern for researchers). Best of all, titanium dioxide is also non-irritating, making it a safe sun-protection choice for sensitive skin.
  • SPF ratings depend on the thickness and uniform application of the product; most SPFs assume generous application and that the product will sit atop the skin--not be rubbed in.
  • IMPORTANT: Because foundation is generally used to even out, not mask, skin, don't rely solely on your makeup's SPF to protect your complexion from sun damage. Instead, always use a product formulated specifically for facial sun protection against UVA and UVB with an SPF of at least 15.
  • Remember: just because you're tan doesn't mean you're sun-safe; even the deepest tan provides at most an SPF of only 2 or 3.
  • By the way, artificial tans provide no added protection.
    For best results:
  • Unless otherwise directed, apply a thick, even coating of sunscreen lotion 30-60 minutes before sun exposure to give your skin time to absorb it. Apply it to any exposed areas of your face and body that will see the sun and do so generously. (Note: some physical sunblock formulas can be applied immediately before exposure because they don't require time to alter the skin's chemistry in order to be effective; use products as directed.)
  • Reapply at the first hint of burning--don't wait until the recommended time for reapplication.
  • Also, make certain that you reapply it every hour or so, especially if you will be sweating or in the water. Always reapply after swimming or exercise, even for waterproof or water-resistant formulas.
If you happen to at one time or another get a sunburn, take an aspirin to reduce the inflammation. Apply an Aloe Vera gel to any sun burnt parts. This will keep your skin cool and moisturized and will lessen the chances of your skin peeling afterwards. You can also use an antioxidant lotion to reduce any damage. Just remember to keep your skin very moist and cool.

Self Tanning Made Easy

What's the secret to a healthy tan? Self-tanning! Stop damaging -- and aging -- your skin and tan the right way this summer (or all year long). With L'Bri's Self Tanning, get the golden look without aging your skin! Anytime anywhere - you can have a rich golden tan without the harmful side effects of the sun. In just hours you will experience a deep, golden tan that lasts days. Apply all over your body in 2 to 4 hours you will begin to develop a natural-looking, no-streaky tan that won't fade for several days. Gradually increase depth of color by repeating application.

Here's all you need to know to get a safe, healthy, golden sunless tan:

What You Need Before Self-Tanning:

The right self-tanner. Both tinted and non-tinted products work the same. Product shades range from fair to very dark. Stick to fair or medium. The darker the shade, the faker the tan tends to look.

Latex gloves. If you don't want to use gloves, just be aware that you need to wash your hands a few times (between fingers, too!) during the application process.

20 volume peroxide developer. Commonly used for hair bleaching, this product (available at beauty supply stores) is your spot "eraser." Dip a Q-Tip in this liquid and apply to areas where you want to remove the tan -- commonly, that might be a streak on the inside of your arm or on your heel. (Make sure you rinse well afterward!) Do NOT use this to remove your entire tan or on a large section of your body. (If you hate your total tan, jump into the shower and exfoliate again. Exfoliating will not completely remove it, but it will fade it. Within a couple of days, it will be gone.)

Time. This process will take a good 60 minutes, at least, including drying time. Most products promise to dry in 15 to 30 minutes, but it really takes more like an hour. That may sound too long, but your smooth, glossy, safe tan will be worth it! Think of it as a spa treatment

How
to Use
Self-Tanning
Products:
1. Exfoliate your skin. Self-tanners work by dyeing the top layer of skin, so it's important to slough your entire body to remove any dead skin build-up that will "catch" the product and result in an uneven tan. The easiest way to do this is in the shower: Use L'Bri's Exfoliating Facial Scrub, a loofah, or stretch bath gloves made for this purpose. Exfoliate your entire body, paying close attention to "dry" areas like knees, ankles and elbows.

2. Make sure your skin is dry. If your skin is even slightly wet, the self-tanner won't go on evenly, and you will have brown streaks! After your shower, vigorously dry your skin. Don't apply the product in a steamy bathroom.

3. Apply moisturizer. A thin coat of moisturizer will make your skin as smooth as it can be and will prepare it for the most even application possible. Let the moisturizer absorb and "dry" for several minutes before applying self-tanner.

4. Apply L'Bri's Self Tanning Lotion as you would a moisturizer. Be sure to use slightly more self-tanner than you would moisturizer, and as you rub it in, make sure you spread it evenly over your skin. (Some women advise using circular motions to avoid streaks.) The trickiest spots are the backs of your legs and your back. (One woman recommends using a paint roller saturated with product on those areas.) Remember that the tops of your feet and backs of your hands should not be as tan as the rest of your body. Apply the product lightly around your ankles, knees and elbows. Make sure the product is fully rubbed into the skin, you will streak wherever it isn't.

5. Moisturize around the edges. To avoid distinct tan lines, apply moisturizer to areas where you did not apply self-tanner, like your feet and backside, then gently rub it into the self-tanned areas.

6. Finally, be sure to dry completely before dressing or going to bed. It may take only 20 minutes to feel dry to the touch, but the longer you can wait before putting anything against your skin, the less likely you are to get splotches. Some labels say you'll be dry enough to dress in 15 minutes, but unless you're rotating in front of a powerful fan, that won't happen.

7. Self Tanning FAQs

Q. I tan easily in the sun, should I apply less of the self-tanning product?
A. A. Your natural tanning ability won't come into play using a self-tanner. Self-tanners work by dyeing the top layer of your skin, which is made up of "dead" skin cells. Your natural tan comes from stimulated melanin pigments found in the lower layers of your skin. So tanning quickly does not mean you will also self-tan quickly, or darker.

Q. I use Retin-A to treat acne breakouts. Can I use self-tanner on my face?
A. Yes, but don't apply both products at the same time; it may irritate your skin. Wait until one dries before applying the other.

Q. My self-tanner smells sour when it's on my skin. Will the smell go away?
A. The sour fragrance you smell coming from your skin is the scent of the chemical reaction, which is what dyes your skin. Different products contain varying degrees of effective "masking" ingredients to minimize the unappealing scent. Several hours after you've applied the product, the sour scent will fade, though it won't go away entirely until you shower.

Q. How long do self-tanners last? When should I reapply?
A. Self-tanners last from three to five days. They gradually fade over time. You don't have to wait until a full fade before you reapply, though some women say they get a more even tan if they do.

Q. The prices vary so much for self-tanners. Will the more expensive brands give me a better tan?
A. Not necessarily. As with most cosmetics, trial and error is the rule of thumb when it comes to finding the product that works best for you. Some women complain that less-expensive brands smell worse. Others say the more-expensive brands don't provide a real-looking tan. Some might prefer an expensive spray because it's easier to apply; others might want to use the same brand that makes their daily moisturizer.

Q. How do I choose a color that's right for me?
A. Here is some tried-and-true advice: Usually, the darker your self-tan, the faker it will look. Try not to go darker than medium, no matter what your skin tone. You can always apply more if the tan isn't dark enough for you; that's a better option than starting with superdark color that may look strange.

Q. How can I make my fake tan look as real as possible?
A. Follow these five guidelines:

  • Avoid streaking and splotching! Follow the advice in How to Use Self-Tanner
  • Don't apply the same depth of color all over; people never tan the same shade everywhere on their bodies. (It's a sure sign the tan is fake.) Apply the product very lightly to the tops of your feet, around the ankles and to the tops of your hands -- places that normally tan lighter than the rest of your body.
  • Avoid tanning your heels, the insides of your arms, your fingers and under your arms. If you do get product on those areas, wash it off before it dries.
  • Apply self-tanner to the face lightly; make sure you apply it evenly around your nostril area, your ears and your neck.
  • Choose a color that is not too dark for you.
